Policyholders with Adriana Insurance Service may want to think twice before taking action against their carrier.

After agreeing to settle in a lawsuit filed by a policyholder, the vengeful California company paid the plaintiff—elderly Andres Carrasco—his $21,000 settlement in coins.

Carrasco filed the lawsuit against Adriana in 2012, claiming he was physically assaulted by a company employee. Adriana settled in June, but apparently wouldn’t deign to just cutting the 73-year-old a check. Instead, eight employees arrived at Carrasco’s lawyer's office in a van chocked full of five-gallon buckets filled with change.

Antonio Gallo, the attorney, told KCBS the payment was so heavy he couldn’t even be sure the correct amount was there.

“There’s over 16 buckets of quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies,” Gallo said. “It’s going to take us at least, conservatively, one week to count that whole amount of money.”

Given the offense, Carrasco—who just had a hernia operation and is unable to lift any of the buckets—responded mildly.

“It’s too heavy,” he said simply.

Carrasco later released a statement in which he condemned the way Adriana treats its customers, specifically the elderly.

“We might be poor, but we are people too,” he said.

Adriana, popular in Los Angeles and surrounding counties, is known as a budget insurance company that also seems to budget on its customer service. As of this writing, the company’s highest Yelp rating was just two stars, assigned by a user in 2012.

“Adriana’s Insurance, is this the way you treat everyone?” Carrasco said in the statement. “Why don’t you like your clients?”

Adriana has remained silent on the issue.
