More cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year, and thanks to the peculiarly American method of deep-frying the annual turkey, grease-related insurance claims more than double according to State Farms.
And they can be expensive. US fire departments respond to more than 1,000 fires each year involving a deep fryer, which results in more than $15 million in property damage each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The hot oil splatter can cause serious burns and even life-threatening injuries.
In order to increase awareness of the potential for injuries,
State Farm trawled through its claims database to identify the top 10 states for grease and cooking-related claims. The following data is based on five years of claims, from 2007 through 2011.
