Since 1997, Bellingham Underwriters has been known for providing insurance solutions to the transportation industry, which remains its largest program, amounting to 95% of total business and approximately $45 million in premiums. The company started as a branch office of a large MGA and was specifically built as a program management company to cater to clients in 10 Western states. It became independent in 2006, was acquired in 2015 and is now a division of a national insurance program administrator. An active member of the TMPAA, Bellingham was a recipient of the TMPAA Best Practice Designation this year.
“What generally separates [us] from other program administrators is our approach,” says president Kevin Robinette. “We have never administered a product that was not designed in our office. We always start with an analysis of historic loss patterns, and then build a selection and rate model. The result is an approach not currently in use in the market, but also one that is more responsive to small operational differences.”
This year, Bellingham Underwriters is focusing on its ambulance and emergency vehicles program. Within six months of a carrier proposal, the Bellingham team created a new rating approach for the auto and medical malpractice lines, developed a proper weighting approach, drafted the rate and ruling filings, and incorporated new rating parameters into its automated systems. The company anticipates it will write $10 million in premium in the first 12 months of the program.
