Markel enters US cyber market with London hire

Markel enters US cyber market with London hire Specialist insurer Markel International has expanded into the US cyber risks market with the appointment of a new senior underwriter in London.

The company has hired Andrew Maher to underwrite emerging risks within its specialty and financial lines division. He will focus on developing the cyber offering which will now cover US-domiciled risks, placed in the London and Lloyd’s market.

Maher will underwrite emerging risk across multiple business sizes, industries and territories. Predominantly, he will write US cyber and technology, media and telecommunications risks, including both Lloyd’s and, less regularly, service-company accounts.

Maher will report to Scott Bailey, head of emerging risks at Markel International.

“The development of our emerging risk business for US risks is a natural extension of our international offering and gives us a unique advantage in the ever toughening global privacy legal landscape,” Bailey said.

He continued: “Our expansion into the US will increase our contact with a broader range of brokers across the London market. Working with our colleagues in the US, we will now be able to accommodate US business placed both domestically and in London.”

Bailey said Maher’s “significant cyber experience will further complement our broker offering.”

Maher joins from Beazley, where he was underwriter on the technology and media team writing a broad portfolio of cyber risk.
