Residents in the Southern US could wake up to foul weather as severe storms are forecast to descend over the region beginning this week.

According to an AccuWeather report, the developing storm system is expected to bring swathes of strong winds, snow and heavy rains to portions of the northern and central plains, and will affect the Gulf Coast going south.

"Severe thunderstorms will likely fire along a potent cold front across eastern Texas, southern Arkansas, and most of Louisiana," AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Rossio noted in the report.

The report further said that while the storms may seem out of season, they are not uncommon and should not be underestimated.

"This area is known for having severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes during the fall or early spring," Rossio added. "All the atmospheric ingredients necessary for damaging winds, hail, and even a few tornadoes will be present during the afternoon on Monday."

AccuWeather further forecast the presence of some tornadoes, although a widespread outbreak is not likely.

Residents in the affected areas were likewise told to brace for damaging wind gusts and flash floods due to heavy rains.
