The Tennessee Department of Revenue will launch an insurance verification system in 2017 to ensure compliance with the state’s Financial Responsibility Law.

Prior to the program’s full implementation, the Department of Revenue is making sure that motorists have their vehicle identification number (VIN) properly indicated on their registration and insurance documents.

State media outlet LocalMemphis.com said in a report that the James Lee Atwood Jr. Law was passed in 2015 to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on state roadways.

“Tennessee already has a financial responsibility law that applies to…drivers. The goal of this new system is to efficiently and effectively check compliance to reduce the number of motorists who lack insurance or (other forms) of financial responsibility,” said revenue commissioner David Gerregano in the report.

Under the verification system, authorized carriers must register with the department and provide pertinent policy information, which will serve as the database against which VINs will be verified. It will also undertake verification on a regular basis, instead of just on renewal deadlines.
