New Mexico’s state auditor wants to re-examine the books of health insurance companies to determine whether they have been above board in paying premium taxes.

Quoting local media, the Santa Fe New Mexican said that state auditor Tim Keller called for an independent audit under the supervision of his office to ensure that insurance firms are paying the right taxes.

Keller’s proposal comes after an initial special audit in September found that New Mexico was unable to collect almost $200 million in premium taxes from health insurance firms in the last five years.

Meanwhile, insurance superintendent John Franchini believes the audit findings to be inaccurate. Still, the report said he supports the initiation of a new audit on the insurance firms.
