Major insurer in Amazon tie-up

Major insurer in Amazon tie-up Liberty Mutual Insurance is helping people to take some of the confusion out of insurance by handing the process off to a digital assistant.

The company has announced the release of the first Amazon Alexa skill focused on insurance from its Liberty Mutual and Safeco brands, according to a news release.

Alexa is the voice service that powers the Amazon Echo, a digital assistant that can do everything from play music and read audiobooks to order pizza. The new Liberty Mutual skill makes the company the only insurance carrier enabling customers to navigate the insurance process simply by using their voice, according to the release.
According to Liberty Mutual, the new skill will enable Amazon Alexa to answer “consumers’ everyday insurance questions and needs from getting a quote to learning tips to worry less on the road or at home.”

We are redefining how auto and homeowners shop for and learn about insurance,” said James MacPhee, executive vice president and CEO of US Consumer Markets for Liberty Mutual. “Alexa presents a unique opportunity to have a vocal presence in consumers’ homes, providing additional value and ease, and allowing a new connection to be made between insurance providers and consumers.”

The Safeco “Insurance Advisor” skill, available now, allows consumers to:
  • Access an “insurance glossary” of insurance terminology
  • Find a nearby agent to get a quote
  • Contact an independent agent to answer more difficult questions
The Liberty Mutual skill, available in the fall, will allow consumers to:
  • Obtain auto insurance estimates by interacting with the Liberty Mutual “Guestimator” tool
  • Receive actionable advice on common seasonal home and auto concerns. This advice will give consumers access to Liberty Mutual’s “MasterThis” resource, where they can get strategies for preparing for common concerns like moving into a new home or handling a roadside emergency
