Connecticut has seen a sustained two year downtrend in the number of complaints filed against insurers, according to preliminary data from the state’s Insurance Department.

Local media outlet ctpost said in a report that the department processed 3,100 complaints in the past year, which mostly dealt with denied claims and disagreements over policies for health, life and property and casualty protections.

The total reflects a 6% drop in the number of complaints handled by Connecticut insurance regulators, the report also said.

“Probably the biggest thing that we see each year is we’ll get a lot of complaints on new laws - that’s always a spike if there’s a change in…insurance law,” Connecticut Insurance Department director of consumer affairs Gerard O’Sullivan said in the ctpost  report.

Also, the report noted that in 2016, 50% of recoveries that involved $5,000 or more in dispute claims were filed against property and casualty insurers, 30% involved health insurance and the rest concerned life insurance.

O’Sullivan advised policy holders to review their coverage to ensure smooth filing of claims to avoid complaints.

“Don’t just accept what the insurance company tells you. Make sure you understand it,” he concluded in the report.
