Chubb announced yesterday that it has appointed Steven Reiss as executive vice president, real estate & hospitality (REH) industry practice leader.

Reiss replaces the previous practice leader Andrew Hurley, who passed away last October.

As practice leader of the unit, Reiss will oversee the “underwriting strategy, production, marketing, product development and management, and profit and loss performance” of Chubb’s REH industry practice within the North America Major Accounts division.

Reiss will be based in New York, where he will report to Chubb North America Major Accounts Division president Chris Maleno.

“On October 10, 2016, our company lost one of our close friends and colleagues, Andrew Hurley, leader of the major accounts real estate and hospitality industry practice. We were profoundly saddened by Andrew’s passing. He was a consummate professional, who represented the best of our company, and will be sincerely missed by all who knew him,” commented Maleno in a statement.

“Chubb remains committed to our real estate and hospitality industry practice. I am happy to welcome Steve back from our continental European operations to the United States and name him as the leader of our real estate and hospitality industry practice. Steve’s global knowledge and management skills, proven track record as the leader of one of our busiest US regions, and in-depth property and casualty underwriting and brokerage experience make him the ideal individual to lead our REH practice. Steve and the strong talent and senior management team within our REH Industry Practice will allow us to continue to carry out our strategy and commitment to this space.”

Reiss has over 25 years of global underwriting, distribution and client management experience in commercial insurance lines. He was most recently chief operating officer in continental Europe. Reiss first started his career in insurance with legacy ACE in July of 2005 as Mid-Atlantic regional executive officer. He then later spent 15 years with Marsh, where he held several management positions including managing director for its Japan Client Services segment. Meanwhile, he began his career with AIG in its large account primary casualty underwriting unit.
