Axis Capital has appointed its current executive vice president and corporate general counsel Conrad D. Brooks to general counsel. The appointment will take effect beginning next year.

Brooks’ main responsibility in his new post will be the oversight of legal, compliance and regulatory operations across the company’s offices.

The firm said in a statement that Brooks will also sit as a member of the company’s executive committee and will report directly to Albert Benchimol, Axis Capital president and chief executive.

Brooks succeeds Richard T. Gieryn Jr. who has been Axis general counsel since 2006. He will retire after serving the company for 14 years.

“He brings to the general counsel position an extensive understanding of our business, as well as deep expertise in the fields of corporate law, insurance regulation, compliance, underwriting support and litigation as it applies to global insurance and reinsurance. We are very proud to appoint him as a senior leader within our organization,” Benchimol said in the statement.

Brooks pursued a JD at the Georgia State University College of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and is a Master of Business Administration (Finance) from Old Dominion University. He also served as an officer in the United States Navy.
