Auto insurance penalties are more severe here than anywhere else Drivers in North Carolina who get pulled up for driving violations could experience the unfortunate distinction of seeing their insurance bills increase by the highest percentage recorded anywhere in America, revealed a report by insurancequotes.com.

The report found that the average insurance bill in North Carolina increased by 49% following a speeding violation—the fourth highest in the country.

Local motorists with a violation citation for reckless driving could face an 94% average insurance rate increase in their insurance bills, placing North Carolina as the seventh highest.

Most confounding of all is the average insurance rate increase following a DUI/DWI in North Carolina—a staggering 333% surge.

In an interview with WSOC-TV, insurancequotes.com senior analyst Laura Adams revealed why the state sees the largest increases in auto insurance following violations.

"North Carolina's rates are very low to begin with," she said. "So what we find is that, when an insurance company has the opportunity to raise rates for North Carolina drivers, they're going to take advantage of that."
