The ability of an insurer to handle claims is among the top considerations an independent insurance agent makes when determining which carrier to place business with, according to the latest “Producers on Carriers” survey from Insurance Business America.

In an auto-related loss, the importance of claims handling is perhaps even greater. The product is becoming increasingly commoditized and in a competitive market, a poor claims experience could mean a client loss.

A new analysis from Insurance.com reveals that for some drivers, accidents and claims happen more frequently.

According to the report, drivers who rent or live with their parents file auto insurance claims much more frequently than those who own their own home. In fact, of the more than 700,000 drivers over the age of 18 who disclosed insurance claims as part of their online comparison shopping:
  • 14.3% of homeowners had filed one insurance claim in the past three years
  • 16.8% of renters had filed a claim
  • 22.2% of drivers living with their parents filed a claim
And before you’re quick to dismiss the disparity as age-related, Des Toups of Insurance.com noted that the pattern holds true “even among drivers will into their 40s.”

“Renters file substantially more claims than homeowners, and people who live with their parents file substantially more than renters,” Toups said.

In addition to the typical 8% discount homeowners receive for bundling home and auto, these statistics may benefit homeowners in their auto insurance rates.

The analysis considered claims of all types: collision, comprehensive, liability and uninsured motorist.
