The top 10 most expensive states for auto insurance

Surprisingly, the costliest auto coverage isn’t in California or New York

New Jersey is the most expensive place to insure a car in the United States, according to a new report issued by the Association of Insurance Commissioners.

On average, motorists in the Garden State paid $1,220 for coverage on the roads in 2012.

While residents in the tri-state area may try to claim that the state has subpar-quality drivers, North Jersey Media Group notes that New Jersey has the highest population density in the nation, which brings more traffic to roadways.

In addition, it points out that the NAIC did not factor in dividends when determining rankings, and New Jerseyans typically receive high dividends from their insurance coverage.

The top 10 costliest, based on economic factors, traffic, urban density, and income per capita, are:
  1. New Jersey
  2. D.C.
  3. New York
  4. Florida
  5. Louisiana
  6. Delaware
  7. Michigan
  8. Rhode Island
  9. Connecticut
  10. Massachusetts
By contrast, the least expensive state was awarded to Idaho, which paid an average of $535.11 for the entire year of 2012.
