Of the 924 life and health insurance carriers licensed in the United States, MetLife Inc. remained the largest, boasting 14.91% of market share in 2013 in terms of life insurance direct premiums written.

Though down from its 16.62% hold in 2012, MetLife continues to be the largest provider of life policies, according to data from the Federal Insurance Office’s 2014 Report.  Meanwhile, UnitedHealth Group Inc. boasted 23.13% of market share in accident and health lines—up slightly from 22.57% in 2012.

In its report on the financial state of the market, the FIO noted that several life and health insurers saw declines in revenue in 2013, largely due to “weakness in international operations, including an unfavorable currency impact.”
