The federal government has recognized the city of Corpus Christi as the fastest growing market to sign up for health insurance plans in Texas. The city was also acknowledged as having the second strongest health insurance market in the country.

In the two weeks leading up to the deadline for signups on Jan. 31, the city enjoyed a 17% growth in enrollments.

"It's great to see here in South Texas ... more people getting access to the care that they need. That's what we want," said Christus Spohn Health System representative Steve Alford.

Christus Spohn Health System—together with the Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living, Amistad Community Health Center, and Heavin & Associates—came up with the "Enroll the Coastal Bend" campaign.

"We've put in over 3,500 man hours the past year. We sent out 8,000 mail-outs and we've been going out to all our hospitals with over a dozen navigators and then meeting with these community groups at their centers, and just trying to get people excited about healthcare," Alford said of the partnership.

Navigators help guide prospective consumers through the health insurance enrollment process. Moreover, the assistance provided by the navigators is free of charge and available all-year-round.

"We educate the consumers on their healthcare options. We give them free enrollment services, as far as helping them fill out the application through healthcare.gov," explained Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living lead navigator Ashleigh Bailey.
